Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I encourage all of my students to first 'Shop Your Stash' for fabric.  With Improv quilts, you can usually find alternative ways to complete your quilt. Sustainability and frugality are important principles for me and I work hard to help students achieve that.   For example, if a pattern calls for 4 yards of a background fabric, I will show you how to use different values of that color to create a unique quilt.

I don't use a lot of specialty rulers.  I show my preferred rulers and how I use them, but I always talk about alternatives.  Most of the cutting is straight lines so any quilters ruler will do.  I like to use squares in different sizes -- these are optional.

I do encourage everyone to buy a Color Wheel and I show you how to use versions that I own.  A color wheel is very helpful and the expense is very minimal.

I also talk about the importance of SHARP rotary blades so you might want to stock up on those.

I will post a monthly schedule of the live sessions.  Dates and times will vary depending on the schedule of a special guest, for instance. I will give as much notice as possible so that you can mark your calendar.  Most of the live sessions will be recorded for later viewing.

Absolutely! For example, the Celebration Quilts Workshop is an artquilt based workshop.  In addition, some of the improvisational workshops provide techniques for making wall quilts or even framed quilts.  I will also be adding a new workshop on making text for use on quilts--and this lends itself directly to making artquilts.

Oh Yes! There will be many workshop choices available to you. The list of ondemand classes will continue to grow.  In fact, I will always be interested in hearing ideas from YOU about new workshops that you would like to see added to the Academy.

Remember, the recordings are always available.  You can come back at any time to view the lessons. You decide which workshops interest you and create your own learning path.  My goal is to minimize the 'pressure' of keeping up.  Flexibility and fun will be our goals.

Yes, I will hold live Q&A/ Show & Tell sessions that are open forum where we will interact real time. Bring your project and your questions and I will do my very best to answer them. Some of the sessions will be scheduled at UK/EU friendly time and, if there is demand, even Australia friendly time!

I will also be active in the Community so we can chat there.

Improv is only ONE of the modern quilt techniques that we will explore.  Several projects are block based and you will have a pattern to use.
When we do explore improv, I demonstrate many techniques so there will be guidance.  There are many, many , many ways to 'do improv' -- and all of those approaches can lead to wonderful quilts.  Everyone in MQA is on a discovery path.  We are all learning and growing together.  And, students in my classes have shown me new ideas that I never thought of!  My goal is to help MIQA members discover their unique approach to improv with guided instruction.  I lay out step-by-step techniques to help you get started.  In my demonstration videos, I also show you what I do when things aren't quite working the way I expected.

Yes, absolutely you can use a wide range of fabrics to make a modern quilt!

Modern quilt makers use bold prints, quiet prints, modern batiks (yes BATIKS!), ombres, hand dyes, etc., etc.

In each workshop, we will discuss many fabric alternatives that you can use.

I will not be selling kits. My goal is to help you use your current stash and do only limited buying or swapping with friends.  I will post links to some of my favorite sources for ombres and African fabrics since those might be hard to find locally for some students.

The Modern Quilt Academy is an ondemand, online program.  You will have access to the materials as long as you are a paid member.

If you know the basics of cutting and piecing basic quilt blocks into a top, then you will be fine.  In fact, some of my beginner students just jump right in and have a grand time.
